University of Massachusetts Boston's First-Generation College Celebration

2020 First-Generation College Celebration

This year, most of our students are remote, but UMass Boston felt it was important to celebrate our first-gen students and community! A working group comprised of staff from across the university came up with creative ways to celebrate remotely and even a socially distant, in-person event in our residence halls! Events included a student created panel featuring our first-gen student leaders, a custom Zoom background for any community member to download, and an "I'm First" event in our residence halls complete with first-gen cookies, stickers, buttons, and postcards that students could customize and mail to their families!

Previous First-Generation College Celebrations

In past years, UMass Boston has held in-person celebrations on campus to recognize our first-generation students and community including creating custom cookies and pins to give away. The University has also held pizza parties, dedicated articles in our student newspaper, and highlighted our students on social media!
