At Indiana University Fort Wayne, we held a special event to honor and celebrate our first-generation students—our very own Red Foxes. These students, who are the first in their families to attend college, embody resilience, determination, and an unwavering commitment to their education. We took this opportunity to not only celebrate their achievements but also to offer support, encouragement, and as it came to be, advice from faculty, staff, and fellow students.

A Sweet Start: Cupcakes and Connection

The event was filled with joy, laughter, and a variety of delicious cupcakes. These cupcakes were more than just a treat—they symbolized the sweetness of accomplishment and the continued success for our first-generation students. The atmosphere was filled with excitement as attendees connected, shared stories, and bonded over their experiences. To make the event even more personal, attendees were given the opportunity to create their own personalized buttons. These buttons featured unique designs and messages that represented their individual journeys, and a reminder of their support system for many.

Sharing Knowledge and Support: 3 Tips for Future First-Generation Students

One of the highlights of the event was the informal conversations between faculty, staff, and students that turned into personal success stories. Everyone shared valuable advice for future first-generation students who are navigating their college experience. These tips, grounded in real-life experiences and expert knowledge, aimed to guide future Red Foxes toward success. Here are the three key tips that stood out during the event:

Build a Strong Support Network

Navigating college life can be overwhelming, especially when you're the first in your family to take this path. One of the most important pieces of advice shared was to build a strong support network. Faculty, staff, and fellow students emphasized the importance of seeking out resources on campus—whether it’s academic advisors, student support services, or helpful peers. Don’t hesitate to ask questions, attend events, or join student organizations because you never know where you’ll find your support. Surrounding yourself with people who understand the challenges you may face can make all the difference in your success and well-being.

Develop Time Management Skills

Balancing academics, extracurricular activities, and personal life can be a juggling act, and it’s especially challenging for first-generation students who may not have the same level of guidance as others. The second tip shared was the importance of mastering time management skills. Faculty members and students alike stressed the importance of staying organized, prioritizing tasks, and not procrastinating. It’s essential to develop a routine that works for you, and to remain flexible when things don’t always go as planned. With strong time management, first-generation students can better navigate the demands of college life and avoid unnecessary stress.

Embrace Your Journey and Stay Resilient

The third piece of advice focused on the power of resilience. First-generation students often face unique challenges, but it’s crucial to remember that setbacks are part of the journey. Faculty, staff, and students encouraged everyone to embrace their personal story and take pride in their accomplishments. When faced with challenges, it’s important to stay focused, seek support when needed, and keep pushing forward. The road to success may not always be easy, but it’s worth it—and the strength gained along the way will be invaluable.

A Heartfelt Celebration

The event was a powerful reminder of the incredible accomplishments of our first-generation students and the immense potential they bring to Indiana University Fort Wayne. The cupcakes, personalized buttons, and helpful advice all contributed to creating an uplifting and supportive environment for our Red Foxes. As we continue to celebrate and support these students, we look forward to seeing them flourish and achieve their dreams—knowing they have the support of the entire IU Fort Wayne community behind them.
