First-generation college students bring valuable perspectives as they navigate the evolving landscape of higher education. The University of Akron (UA) recognizes and leverages these strengths, creating innovative, student-focused programs that empower these students to achieve academic success, personal growth, and a strong sense of community. Through scholarships, mentorship, and a variety of comprehensive support services, UA helps first-generation students build on their potential and thrive.
Akron Rises Program
Akron Rises promotes educational opportunities through holistic admission processes and wrap-around support services for students. The program offers crucial resources during the transition from high school to college, a critical period for many first-generation students. Individual coordinators assist students with academic advising, life coaching, career exploration, and registration procedures. This comprehensive approach ensures that students receive the guidance they need to navigate their college journey confidently.
Choose Ohio First STEM Scholarship Program
The Choose Ohio First STEM Scholarship Program supports underrepresented students, including many first-generation learners, in STEM fields at UA. Students gain access to in-house tutoring, computers, and private study spaces for academic success. The program offers financial support and additional resources to promote achievement. Funded by the Ohio Department of Higher Education, it aims to boost STEM enrollment and strengthen Ohio’s STEM industry. Mentoring and networking opportunities connect students with industry professionals and academic advisors. These resources help students overcome challenges and empowers participants for long-term educational and career success.
Collegiate Success Scholars Program
The Collegiate Success Scholars program offers a comprehensive academic and student support system designed to ensure underrepresented students build a strong academic foundation and stay on track for graduation. Through a case management approach, the program addresses academic and personal challenges, fosters student engagement, and provides tailored guidance to each participant. Students in the program also benefit from access to in-house tutoring services, computers, and private study spaces, creating an environment that supports focused learning and academic excellence. This personalized and resource-rich support system empowers students to overcome obstacles and develop strategies for long-term success.
Peer Mentoring - The Office of Multicultural Development
The Office of Multicultural Development at UA connects experienced upper-class students with first-year students through a voluntary, year-long Peer Mentoring Services program. Mentors, who maintain a minimum GPA of 2.75, provide academic, professional, and personal support to mentees, helping them transition to college life. The program reduces feelings of isolation, fosters a sense of belonging, and builds valuable connections, enhancing the first-year experience and improving retention rates.
ZipAssist and Persistence Programs
UA’s ZipAssist office supports students through persistence programs and parent engagement efforts. The Zips Tech initiative provides free technology devices to first-generation and under-resourced students. ZipAssist collaborates on programs like JumpStart-Powered by PNC, offering mentorship and financial wellness education. The Help-A-Zip early alert system manages over 1,200 referrals annually. It connects students to resources like emergency financial aid, counseling, and academic advising. By addressing challenges early, ZipAssist helps students stay on track academically. These initiatives foster a supportive environment for student success.
We are proud to share that the University of Akron’s innovative student support programs demonstrate a deep commitment to the success of first-generation college students. By providing financial assistance, mentorship, academic support, and community engagement opportunities, these initiatives empower students to overcome obstacles and achieve their dreams. UA continues to foster an inclusive environment where first-generation students can thrive, contribute, and make lasting impacts both on campus and beyond.
