2019 SXSW EDU Panel- Low Income and First-Gen Aren’t the Same Thing!
March 4-7

SXSW EDU Panel

On Monday, March 4, 2019, from 2:00-3:00 pm CT, Senior Director, Dr. Sarah E. Whitley will join Eric Waldo of Reach Higher, Cecilia Marshall of the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, and Adam Harris of The Atlantic to discuss how Low Income and First-Gen Aren't the Same Thing!

Education advocates, wonks and journalists tend to conflate the terms “low-income” and “first-generation,” using them interchangeably. But not all first-gen students come to college with financial hardship. And not all low-income students are the first in their family to attend college. How do the needs of low-income and first-gen students vary? And where do they converge? How can institutions and advocates shape policy -- and practice -- in ways that create pathways to opportunity for both.
