Black Hawk College's First-Generation College Celebration
November 8

Black Hawk College FGCC

2019 First-Generation College Celebration

The programming will consist of two pieces:

  1. A short presentation on goal setting and advice for student success. Students will write little notes on “First-Gen Gems” that we will then use to decorate the office space and share positive experiences from students to prospective students.
  2. The Financial Aid office will present ways to fund college. Paying for college is a large barrier to many of our students.

The event will end with more networking opportunities, snacks, and the ability to meet with or set up an appointment with an advisor. Pre-engagement will include marketing to current TRiO students, marketing specifically to prospective TRiO students, and collaborating with other college areas to invite any first-generation college student to attend. We will also be sharing tips and testimonials on Black Hawk College’s social media to highlight the successes of our first-generation students and staff. Post-engagement will be sharing the “First-Gen Gems” on social media and having a great indication of the support students need to be successful as First-Generation college students. Additionally, our marketing team will interview a few students and staff to create a blog post about how students can overcome any barriers they have from being the first person in their family to obtain a degree.

Black Hawk College will share testimonials online, using information from Gems to take intentional action when it comes to scheduling workshops of importance for students, and marketing will write a blog post about the event and how students can get support on campus for their specific barriers.

2018 First-Generation College Celebration

TRiO will host Black Hawk College students who are either first- or second-year students who have indicated they are first-generation college students. They were invited to an open house style event where students will enjoy snacks, networking with each other and student services, as well as participate in programming.

2017 First-Generation College Celebration

The campus areas that will be included in this event include One Stop Center (general advising), Recruitment, Financial Aid, ESL, and the Scholarship Office. These student services departments will share information and be present to offer materials or set up appointments with students who need them. The general idea is to show first-generation students that they have a community of support that includes staff members who are first-generation and have succeeded in their educational goals.

Be sure to follow them on Facebook.
