2021 First-Generation College Celebration

Cal Poly Pomona’s 2021 First-Generation College Celebration will consist of a week-long series of events celebrating our First-generation student population while also promoting programmatic initiatives that support first-gen students’ academic progress. Supporting first-generation college students navigate college is at the forefront of our planning and implementation for this week. We will launch the First-Gen week festivities with a Kick-Off Celebration and host various workshops led by campus partners across divisions and departments. Our kick-off celebration will be in-person and some of the highlights include a photobooth, refreshments, a service-learning project and swag giveaways. Following the kick-off we will have virtual events on the unwritten rules of navigating the academic environment, a first-gen student mixer, professional headshot day and the opportunity to engage in a live streamed broadcast with Michelle Obama. Additionally, we will also continue our poster campaign to create more visibility of first-gen faculty, staff and students across campus while also disseminating information about our first-gen population at Cal Poly Pomona. The campaign will consist of posters that feature our first-gen student, staff, and faculty members along with a bio. We will also utilize social media platforms to expand first-gen awareness and advertise scheduled events. This celebration will also serve as an opportunity to celebrate and promote awareness about what it means to be a first-gen student, some of the common challenges and misconceptions but most importantly to put front and center the campus resources available for first-gen success.

2020 First-Generation College Celebration

This previous year in 2020, due to the pandemic, Cal Poly Pomona offered virtual events on scholarships and financial aid, kicked off our First-Gen Series, First to Launch with our alumni Luis Dominguez, a mentor panel, canvased our social media with first-gen stories, and handed out swag via drive-through and mail. The year prior, in 2019, we had an outdoor community celebration and campaign, a first-gen panel that consisted of alumni and faculty, and a mentor/mentee mixer, all in collaboration with campus partners.
