Fullerton College's First-Generation College Celebration
November 8
2023 First-Generation College Celebration
Fullerton College will be celebrating the 2nd first-gen celebrations with the campus community starting November 7th.
Fullerton College will join other colleges and universities in celebration of First-Gen students by showing up to inspire, support, celebrate, bring awareness and amplify the voices of Fullerton College first-generation students for the First-Gen Celebration.
First-generation students are first in their family to attend college, whose parent(s) did not complete a four-year college or university degree in the U.S.
Starting November 7, 2023, Counseling/Pathways to Success and the Puente Program are co-hosting 2 events 10:30-2:00pm. I’m First Resource Fair 10:30-12:30pm (campus quad) and Hornet Hero: Donato Martinez 12:30-2:00 pm (room 224).
"I’m First" Resource Fair will take place at the quad/free speech area. Students will have the opportunity to learn how different programs support and celebrate first-generation students on campus. This is also an opportunity for students to connect with faculty and staff. Information about graduation and transfer will be available. Counseling Faculty will be present to provide support and help guide students as they plan for transfer and/or completion of their degree award.
The "Hornet Hero" with Donato Martinez, our keynote speaker will take place right after the resource fair. Donato is a first-generation English professor at Santa Ana College, former Fullerton College student, a Puente Co-Coordinator and published author who will share his poetry about his culture, barrio upbringing and bilingual identities. Refreshments will be served.
Colleagues are invited to consider supporting this initiative:
- Join the fair to engage with students.
- Share information with students in the classroom
- Provide an opportunity for students to earn extra credit by attending the Hornet Hero session.
Counseling/Pathways to Success and the Puente Program are inviting faculty to engage with students by taking time on November 8th in their classrooms and/or also posting to their canvas courses information, to share their higher education journeys/stories, challenges, successes and intersectional identities (including first-gen) and how these have shaped their professional journeys.
Let's build community and celebrate together!
Use #HornetFirstGen and #FullertonCollege to show your support for this celebration!
