2020 First-Generation College Celebration

St. Mary’s College of Maryland is proud to host three events/activities for the First-Generation College Celebration. These are held in cooperation with our College President’s Sum Primus, Sum Exemplar First Generation Program.

The first event is a panel of first-generation faculty and staff for the First-Generation College Celebration. The panel will be held on November 9 and will feature questions and a discussion of the challenges and triumphs of these first-generation professionals and how to charted their course to academic success.

Throughout the week, the DeSousa-Brent Scholars Program, which is coordinating the celebration, will distribute buttons to first-generation faculty and staff to wear to show their support for first-generation students. We also hope it will be a visual representation of the fact that first-generation students are welcome and that they can and do succeed at our institution.

The final event is a panel discussion of first-generation students to be held on Friday, November 13. The students will be discussing the types of instructional techniques and strategies that have helped them succeed at the College. Focused on faculty, our hope is to use the panel as a springboard for further faculty development efforts through our partner, the Center for Inclusive Teaching and Learning.
