2020 First-Generation College Celebration

The New School is excited to celebrate first-gen students, faculty, and staff for the third year in a row! Just a few days earlier on November 4th, the New School Firsts committee will gather for a virtual panel featuring first-gen alumni, professionals, and New School staff who will share what makes them proud, independent, persistent, adaptable, and resourceful during a monumental time in our history.

2019 First-Generation College Celebration

This year, The New School will #CelebrateFirstGen for a second year in a row. The first-gen college celebrations will kick off with a happy hour for first-gen graduate students and faculty which will lead into a panel featuring three first-gen professionals who will share their own personal journey's and offer advice to other first-gen students.

Also new this year, we have added some limited edition swag for the first 20 attendees, including tote bags designed by a first-gen art and design student from Hawaii.

2018 First-Generation College Celebration

New School Firsts is a committee at The New School that works to support First-Generation College Student. This year, the New School Firsts planned events for the week leading up to National First-Generation College Celebration Day (November 8). Events included a first-generation faculty/staff lunch, a community letter writing campaign to local representatives advocating for policies that support first-generation students, a career networking event for first-generation students, and a closing celebration where invited guest spoke about their journey as first-generation student in academia.
