2023 First-Generation College Celebration
The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay is enthusiastically hosting First-Generation Celebration Week November 6th-10th 2023. With over 50% of the UW-Green Bay student population identifying as First-Gen, this is the third year UW-Green Bay will be celebrating National First-Gen College Student Celebration Day, but the first time there will be an entire week of events dedicated to celebrating First-Gen students. A true campus collaboration, The First Gen Student Success Collaborative has coordinated efforts across the university at all four campuses, to provide a variety of impactful events to support student success and showcase support and opportunities for First-Gen students. The week-long event will include:
- Career Closet open houses
- Family Pressures: Encanto movie screening, student panel & discussion
- National First-Gen College Student Celebration Day Tabling in high-traffic areas with treats, giveaways and activities
- 1st Annual First-Gen Impact Awards
- Financial Wellness Fair
On November 8th, National First-Gen College Student Celebration Day, UW-Green Bay will be hosting the inaugural First-Gen Impact Awards that will be held each fall to recognize first-generation students and celebrate faculty, staff and student innovations and achievements which lead to first generation college student success.
UW-Green Bay is also debuting the Financial Wellness Fair during First-Gen Celebration Week. The event will have a Keynote by Professor and Head of Personal Financial Planning Program, Dr. Preston Cherry. The event will also feature personal finance sessions, credit & fraud education, paying for college & financing your education information, and campus financial resources. This is a great opportunity for our first-gen students and will be available in-person and virtually. Many instructors are giving class credit for attending.
First-generation students are resilient problem solvers, navigating higher education without a parental model or roadmap. UW-Green Bay continuously works to improve the outcomes and experiences of first-generation college students and looks forward to celebrating during First-Gen Celebration Week.
In this week’s ‘Minute with Mike,’ Mike shares his appreciation and excitement for all that we do to support the more than 50% First Generation students that attend UW-Green Bay. Listen to Mike’s full comments here, and let’s celebrate these outstanding students on First Generation Student Celebration Day next week!
