West Texas A&M University's First-Generation College Celebration
November 8

West Texas A&M University
2020 First-Generation College Celebration

The First-Generation College Celebration will happen again at West Texas A&M University! F1RSTGEN will be hosting an outside event that will include music, socially distanced games, and lots of fun and cool activities! They will celebrate on Monday Nov 9th, since Nov 8th falls on a Sunday. This way, more students, faculty, and staff are engaged and have the opportunity to celebrate. A snapchat filter will be used, prizes will be given, and a video honoring those who identify as first-generation on campus is being produced and will be showcased at this event.

Social distancing, hand sanitizer stations, and mask wearing are practices they will follow to have a fun event while following guidelines.

2019 First-Generation College Celebration

This year, F1RSTGEN hosted their Kick-Off Bash for a 3rd year, which included a welcome from the university president and provost. They will be hosting a F1RSTGEN Week that will celebrate first-generation faculty, staff, and students through different events on campus. During this week, they will host a banquet to honor outstanding first-generation students, faculty, staff, and community leaders. During National First-Generation Student Day, they plan to host a campus wide celebration by painting our campus F1RSTGEN. Finally, they will host F1RSTGEN talks that will allow community leaders, faculty, staff, and students to talk about their struggles, success, and accomplishment bein first-generation.

2018 First-Generation College Celebration

In 2018, they continued with their 2nd Kick Off Bash, celebrated National First-Generation College Celebration once again, attended a first-generation summit in Texas Tech University, and hosted a F1RSTGEN car show fundraiser to finish the school year.

2017 First-Generation College Celebration

Since 2017 was their first year as an organization on campus, F1RSTGEN decided to celebrate first-generation students throughout the whole school year. They started with our Kick-Off Bash at the beginning of the fall semester to welcome new first-generation students to campus. They also celebrated National First-Generation College Celebration on November 8 by passing out donuts, taking pictures, and allowing students, faculty, and staff an opportunity to sign our F1RSTGEN posterboard.
