First-generation Student Success at the University of California

The University of California has long served as an engine of economic mobility for all Californians, regardless of income or background. This fall, an estimated 45 percent of new UC freshmen — about 16,500 students — are working to be the first in their families to earn a four-year university degree. This policy brief highlights some of the unique ways that UC serves first-generation students and empowers
them to achieve their goals.
