Revisiting College Access and Equity: Perspectives of Continuing-Generation College Students on Their First-Generation Peers

Desta et al. / Journal of First-generation Student Success / March 2024

Although researchers have primarily focused on the experiences of first-generation college students, it is crucial to understand the perspectives of students whose parents have also attended college. The authors conducted 21 individual interviews with such students to learn about their pre- and during-college perceptions of their first-generation peers. Their findings recommend that higher education professionals engage continuing-generation students in mentorship or ally programs for first-generation students, offer individualized counseling opportunities, and expand financial aid.
