At the University of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder), we believe in the saying, 'It takes a village'. This year, our First-Generation Programs and Enrichment Office has taken strides toward embodying this philosophy by expanding its capacity to serve all first-generation students on campus—a mission driven by collaboration, innovation, and a shared commitment to student success.

Historically, CU Boulder’s First-Generation Programs and Enrichment Office primarily served students within the First-Generation Scholars Program. However, recognizing the diverse perspectives and experiences of our broader first-generation student population, we’ve embarked on a transformative journey to create a more extensive and comprehensive support network. At the heart of this initiative is L.I.N.K., a working group connecting first-gen students with programs focusing on academic success, career development, and community connections.

Building Bridges Through L.I.N.K.

L.I.N.K. (Liberate, Inspire, Nourish, Know) launched in the 2023-2024 academic year. The group’s mission is simple yet impactful: increase first-generation programming, engagement, and presence on campus while linking students to a supportive network of faculty, staff, and peers.

Some of the hallmark programs facilitated through L.I.N.K. include:

- First-Generation Orientation Day (cohosted with New Student and Family Programs)

- Monthly First-Generation Student Success Workshops (cohosted by various offices, including Career Services, Basic Needs Center, Academic Coaching, Beyond Campus Buffs, etc.): Skill-building workshops for first-generation students

- First-Generation Career and Alumni Panel (cohosted with Career Services)

- First-Generation Law Student Lunch and Law School Tour (cohosted with the School of Law)

- First-Generation Day of Service (cohosted with the Volunteer Resource Center)

These events have set the foundation for a robust support system that highlights the resilience of first-generation students and celebrates their unique contributions to our campus community.

Expanding the Village

In fall 2024, we expanded L.I.N.K.’s impact by strengthening connections across campus. Collaboration remains key, and our efforts encourage departments, faculty, and staff to think creatively about how they can better support first-generation students through targeted programming and engagement.

This collaborative model has already proven its value. By leveraging a network of first-gen support enthusiasts, including faculty, staff, and campus leaders, we’ve created a “hive mind” of resources and ideas. Together, we’re not just expanding access—we’re redefining what it means to support first-gen students holistically.

A Shared Vision for the Future

Our expanded programming and collaborative efforts reflect CU Boulder’s commitment to fostering an environment where first-gen students can thrive. Through initiatives like L.I.N.K., we aim to ensure that every first-generation student on our campus feels seen, supported, and celebrated.

This work is only the beginning. As we continue to grow our village, we hope that our collective efforts will shape a brighter future for CU Boulder’s first-generation community. It truly takes a village to make sure that no student travels on this journey alone.
