First-generation college students face unique challenges as they navigate higher education, often balancing academic pressures with personal and financial responsibilities. Indiana University South Bend (IUSB) recognizes these challenges and with our emphasis on student involvement, has developed a unique club to help first-generation students succeed. This initiative is First-Gen Titans, a student-led club that focuses on providing community and valuable resources to help students thrive both academically and professionally. While the club primarily serves first-generation students, it is open to all, offering a space for everyone to provide or seek support and build community.

First-Gen Titans: Support to Success

First-Gen Titans offers both personal and professional development opportunities. This student-led organization connects first-gen students, creating a network of peers who share similar experiences. This year, we have hosted events such as:

- Workshops on preventing burnout and boosting motivation

- The national First-Generation College Celebration, promoting pride, courage, and resilience in being a first-gen student

- A faculty and staff luncheon, where students can engage with first-generation faculty and staff to gain advice on excelling in college and beyond

These events foster a sense of community and provide students with valuable skills to succeed academically and professionally.

Collaboration with Campus Resources

The success of First-Gen Titans is strengthened by collaborations with various campus resources. These partnerships ensure that students receive holistic support, both inside and outside the classroom. Some of our key partnerships include:

U Bring Change 2 Mind: A club that works to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and promote awareness. This partnership helps us reach first-gen students and provide tools for managing stress, avoiding burnout, and setting a strong academic and mental foundation.

21st Century Scholars: This partnership allows First-Gen Titans to connect with another group of first-gen students and offer events that promote community, build lasting relationships, and provide professional and academic support.

These collaborations create a comprehensive support system that empowers first-gen students to reach their full potential.

Reaching More Students: Maximizing Impact

The collaborative approach of First-Gen Titans ensures that all first-gen students at IUSB can access these essential resources. Through outreach efforts such as social media campaigns and events, the club actively works to ensure that no student is left behind. By connecting with other campus departments, we maximize our reach and impact, ensuring students are aware of and can utilize the full range of support services available to them.

Conclusion: A Holistic Path to Success

Indiana University South Bend’s commitment to supporting first-generation students is clear through the creation of First-Gen Titans and its collaboration with campus resources. By offering peer support, professional development, academic assistance, and mental health resources, IUSB sets first-gen students up for success. This model serves as an example for other institutions, demonstrating how targeted, collaborative efforts can empower the next generation of college students to thrive.
