Colorado Mesa University's First-Generation College Celebration

2023 First-Generation College Celebration

Each year, Colorado Mesa University celebrates First-Gen Day with a campus-wide celebration BBQ. Our Student Life team grills burgers for the entire campus and our TRIO staff and students help bring the energy! CMU's president gives remarks at noon and students are encouraged to stop by the photo wall to take a picture and share their First-Gen Story.

This year, we are expanding to a month of first-gen events, including t-shirt distributions, First-Gen Recognition Night at the CMU volleyball game, Upward Bound celebrations, and a special First-Gen Forum, featuring CMU First-Gen students and faculty. The Forum will be moderated by our local state representative, Rick Taggart, and include our city's mayor and first-gen student, Anna Stout! Local "future first-gen" students have been invited from local after-school organizations like Upward Bound, Migrant Education, and more.

Our first-gen family at CMU is thrilled to be celebrating the stories of our first-gen students all November long!
