2020 First-Generation College Celebration

This year, Metropolitan State University Denver will hold the Annual First Generation Celebration Week virtually November 2-8th. The goal is to bring together the first-gen community to celebrate and empower first-gen students, faculty, staff, and families. Students are invited to participate in several events throughout the week. Events include:

Game Time: Monday, Nov. 2nd from 2-3:15 pm

A fun way for students to meet new people, laugh, and have fun!

Let's Talk: Navigating Family Pressure: Tuesday, Nov. 3rd 10:00-11:00 am

An opportunity for first-gen students to share openly about the pressure they feel to balance school and family life.

Panel Discussion on Managing Imposter Syndrome: Wednesday, Nov. 4th 11:00-12:00 pm

Students, faculty, and staff will engage in a discussion on how they manage their overwhelming feelings of self doubt, also known as the imposter syndrome phenomenon.

Employer Panel: Thursday, Nov. 5th 2:30-3:30 pm

First-gen students will hear first-hand tips on the job search process from employers in different industries. They will learn best practices that can make or break their job search process.

Family Night with Hoan Do: Friday, Nov. 6th 6-7:30 pm

First-Gen students and their families are invited to attend the key note speaker Hoan Do, American Ninja Warrior contestant. Hoan Do will discuss how families can best support their students in their college journey.

2019 First-Generation College Celebration

Last year, MSU Denver's Office of First Generation Initiatives launched the Annual First Generation Celebration Week. Each day, there was a different event for students to attend including; a documentary and discussion on first-gen experiences, the First-Gen Forum with workshops on scholarships, navigating family pressures, and other helpful topics, as well as a Night out at the Symphony for first-gen students and their families. The week was dedicated to celebrating, empowering, and bringing together the first-gen community.

2018 First-Generation College Celebration

Metropolitan State University of Denver's First-Gen Initiatives and TRIO SSS Office will collaborate organizing the institution's first First-Generation College Celebration. The event will take place on November 8 from 11-2pm, where students will be welcome to stop by and celebrate their accomplishments by enjoying cake, receiving "I'm First-Gen" t-shirts, and gain access to many resources. Additionally, there will be an area where the following offices will table: multicultural center, women's center, peer mentoring, and LGBTQ student resource center.
