Tusculum University's First-Generation College Celebration
November 8

2023 First-Generation College Celebration

Tusculum University's Thomas J. Garland Library will unveil an exhibit celebrating first-generation contemporary authors.

At noon on November 8, we will have a brief ceremony with remarks from University President, Dr. Hummel, and Rachael Barnett, director of Student Support Services. Kathy Hipps, the library’s director, will discuss the display and new resources, and an SSS student will read one or two passages from new books. We will then celebrate with cake!

The drop-in exhibit will include a social media station where students can write on white boards "First-Generation means that I am.....," snap a photo and tag it on social media.

Faculty and staff members who reported their status as first-generation students qualified to receive a T-shirt identifying them as part of that group, which they are encouraged to wear for the celebration. First-generation students who attend the event will also receive a t-shirt while supplies last.

Finally, Tusculum's Marketing Department has created an addition to employees’ email signatures that identifies them as a first-generation student. Faculty and staff are encouraged to incorporate it in their signatures.

Tusculum's SSS program is able to hold the celebration thanks to a $1,000 scholarship from the Center for First-generation Student Success.
