A Perspective From a First-Generation Medical Student on the Canadian Pre-med Pipeline

As a rising fourth year first-generation medical student applying to radiology residency programs this fall, I have started to reflect on my journey. What felt seemingly unreachable is now a palpable reality. Overcoming barriers many first-generation. students face continues to be a part of my story. “How did I do it?” is a question I ask myself and others ask me particularly those who, like me, are first-generation students from minority backgrounds. In this opinion piece, I hope to shed light on some origins of this question and suggest actionable steps to make this question less common.
