Celebrating and Empowering First-generation College Students
Brittany Baer, M.A., Carroll Community College / FirstGen Forward / September 23, 2020
This year, Carroll Community College implemented the First In My Family program, which serves to recognize and support the first-generation student population at the College. While Carroll Community College offers many support services college-wide, the First In My Family program is the first initiative that focuses solely on the needs of first-generation students and the contributions they bring to the campus community.
The First In My Family program invites new students who identify as first-generation to participate in a series of events throughout the year that provide them with tools and resources for success, both academically and personally. Students participating in the First In My Family program will begin their journey by utilizing the CliftonStrengths Assessment tool to assist them in identifying their talents and learning how to leverage those to meet their full potential. Upcoming programs will focus on topics such as academic and transfer planning, meditation, study and time management tips, and Q&A sessions with faculty in each student’s area of study. Participating students will also have the opportunity to make requests and recommendations as to what topics and resources they would like to see in the future. Due to social distancing measures set forth in the wake of COVID-19, all programs this year will be in an online format.
In addition to accessing monthly events, students in the First In My Family program were awarded scholarships, which students may renew annually as long as they remain in good academic standing. The scholarships are being funded by the Carroll Community College Foundation.
Carroll hopes to continue to expand the First In My Family program in the years to come by incorporating peer mentorship opportunities and a recognition ceremony for graduates of the program. We are very excited to see what great things come from this program and, more importantly, from the students who participate!
